By Our Insights Desk
Our monthly feature The India Box Office Report tracks the performance of the various films released every month at the Indian (domestic) box office. Monthly reports are published on this website in the third week of the following month. This is the April 2025 edition of the report. You can access the previous reports in the Insights section of this website.
Cumulative Box Office: April 2025
After a sharp dip in March, April 2025 saw momentum being regained at the India box office, with gross domestic collections of ₹825 Cr, including projected future collections of April releases still running in theatres.
The cumulative box office for 2025 releases stands at ₹3,691 Cr, which is 19% higher than the same period in 2024.
Top 10 Films
The chart below lists the top 10 films released in April 2025, based on their box office performance in India.
Good Bad Ugly, starring Ajith Kumar, emerged as the top-grossing film of April 2025, grossing over ₹180 Cr, and is also the highest-grossing Tamil film of the year so far. Next comes the Malayalam film Thudarum, starring Mohanlal, which grossed almost ₹150 Cr at the domestic box office. Since Thudarum’s Tamil version released in May 2025, only the Malayalam & Telugu language box office for the film have been considered in this report. The other films to cross the ₹100 Cr gross mark in April 2025 are Hindi films Kesari Chapter 2 & Jaat, starring Akshay Kumar & Sunny Deol respectively.
With four Malayalam films in this month’s Top 10 highest-grossing films (Thudarum, Alappuzha Gymkhana, Maranamass & Bazooka), April 2025 has turned out to be a strong month for Malayalam Cinema, grossing over ₹200 Cr cumulative only for the second time ever (after February 2024).
Hindi and Telugu languages lead the list of the top grossers of 2025 so far with three films each. With the addition of Good Bad Ugly and Thudarum, Tamil and Malayalam languages now have two films each in the top 10 films of 2025. There is currently no Hollywood film in the list, but we can expect that to change in May 2025, with the release of Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning.
Language Share
For language share calculation, language-wise box office of films releasing in multiple languages is assigned to the corresponding language. However, for Hollywood, the data for all languages is reported under the language head ‘Hollywood’.
Malayalam cinema's share stands at an all-time high of 13%, only four percentage points beyond Tamil cinema. The 13% share is especially creditable because it's higher than the 10% share in 2024, which was the best-ever year for Malayalam cinema at the box office by some margin.
How to read the numbers in this report?
Different language industries follow different reporting conventions (Gross, Nett or Share). We have used Gross Box Office as the unified measure for this report. For films releasing in multiple languages, collections are added up across languages to arrive at the film’s Gross Box Office at an all-India level.
Some films may be running in theatres at the time of publishing this report every month. For these films, Gross Box Office is estimated based on the latest trends available. Hence, it is normal that some numbers may be updated in the following month’s report, once actual collections have been estimated.
Numbers for a film are assigned to the month of its release, even if the business is spread over two or more months. For example, Kalki 2898 AD released on June 27, 2024, and a sizeable component of the film’s business was registered in July 2024. However, in the analysis, Kalki 2898 AD’s entire box office has been credited to the month of June.
