By Our Insights Desk
Our monthly feature The India Box Office Report tracks the performance of the various films released every month at the Indian (domestic) box office. Monthly reports are published on this website in the third week of the following month. This is the February 2025 edition of the report. You can access the previous reports in the Insights section of this website.
Cumulative Box Office: March 2025
After two months of strong box office performance, March 2025 turned out to be a low-key month, grossing only ₹585 Cr at the domestic box office, including projected future collections of March releases still running in theatres. The collections of the month were led by the Eid releases, L2E Empuraan and Sikandar, which both grossing more than ₹120 Cr.
The cumulative box office for 2025 releases stands at ₹2,868 Cr, which is 9% higher than the same period in 2024.
Top 10 Films
The chart below lists the top 10 films released in March 2025, based on their box office performance in India.
L2E Empuraan has emerged as the top-grossing film of the month, grossing ₹129 Cr, becoming one of the highest-grossing Malayalam films of all time. Salman Khan starrer Sikandar turned out to be an underperformer at the box office, given its starcast and budget, grossing a modest ₹122 Cr. The other releases to gross above ₹50 Cr was the Telugu comedy sequel MAD Square and the Tamil film Veera Dheera Sooran Part-2, starring Vikram. All four highest-grossing films of the month released during the festive Eid period.
L2E Empuraan and Sikandar are the latest additions to the list, with the former being the first Malayalam film to feature in this list in 2025. Telugu films continue to lead the representation in this list, with four films.
Language Share
For language share calculation, language-wise box office of films releasing in multiple languages is assigned to the corresponding language. However, for Hollywood, the data for all languages is reported under the language head ‘Hollywood’.
Because of the box office performance of L2E Empuraan, the Malayalam language share at 9% this year is closer to its share in 2024, (10%).
How to read the numbers in this report?
Different language industries follow different reporting conventions (Gross, Nett or Share). We have used Gross Box Office as the unified measure for this report. For films releasing in multiple languages, collections are added up across languages to arrive at the film’s Gross Box Office at an all-India level.
Some films may be running in theatres at the time of publishing this report every month. For these films, Gross Box Office is estimated based on the latest trends available. Hence, it is normal that some numbers may be updated in the following month’s report, once actual collections have been estimated.
Numbers for a film are assigned to the month of its release, even if the business is spread over two or more months. For example, Kalki 2898 AD released on June 27, 2024, and a sizeable component of the film’s business was registered in July 2024. However, in the analysis, Kalki 2898 AD’s entire box office has been credited to the month of June.
