We publish regular reports on the Indian streaming landscape on this website, looking at content, platforms, and audiences from different perspectives. Most such reports look at the streaming category from an audience, i.e., the demand side. But looking at the category from the supply side can be equally interesting. The analysis that follows looks at the number of streaming originals in India over the years, and their breakup by platforms, languages, and formats, to build an understanding of how the landscape is shaping up from a content perspective.
The analysis is based on a count of streaming or OTT originals launched in India across all major platforms, excluding YouTube. Platforms covered in the analysis are: JioHotstar (including its predecessors Disney+ Hotstar and JioCinema), Netflix, Prime Video, Sony LIV, ZEE5, Amazon MX Player, Hoichoi, Aha, Sun NXT, Hungama Play, ETV Win, Ultra Jhakaas, Kilkk, Addatimes, and Discovery+. There are several other platforms (the most prominent of them being Stage) that are not covered in this analysis. We hope to widen the scope of this analysis next year to include more platforms.
While we have scanned the ecosystem thoroughly, there may still be some low-key, unpromoted launches that our research has missed. Different seasons of the same property have been considered as separate entries, even if launching in the same year. However, staggered launches (e.g., a show launched in two parts) have been considered as a single entry. ‘Hinglish’ content, as well as multi-lingual content where Hindi is the primary language of consumption, has been classified as Hindi in this analysis. International content has been excluded from this analysis, which focuses only on content produced in India In 2025. JioHotstar launched 27 influencer properties under the 'Sparks' sub-brand. These have been excluded from this analysis as well, to ensure parity in year-wise comparative analysis.
An important shift in our thinking regarding OTT content is related to the blurring distinction between OTT originals and TV+OTT content, especially reality shows like Bigg Boss, Kaun Banega Crorepati and Indian Idol, which have an equally strong presence on both linear television and streaming. In our recent product launch Ormax StreamView, we have removed this distinction altogether, in context of reporting viewership estimates on OTT, in line with our vision to estimate and report what India is streaming. However, from the supply side, the originals vs. non-originals distinction still matters, because content budgets are allocated differently for OTT originals, TV+OTT content, TV-first shows, and other acquisitions, such as theatrical films or sports. This report focuses only on OTT originals, i.e., properties which are not available to watch on linear television.
The chart below captures the number of streaming originals in India year-on-year, from 2018 to 2025, across languages, platforms, and formats.

After peaking in 2023 at 383 properties, the category witnessed an 18% drop in the number of originals that launched in 2024, highlighting a slowdown. There's a further 13% drop from 2024 to 2025, The 2024 number is the lowest since 2019. A part of this drop is explained by the banning of certain apps in 2025, particularly Ullu, which contributed 17 originals to the 2024 count of 315.
Next, we look at how the count of originals varies by platforms. All platforms that had 10 or more originals launched in 2025 have been depicted in the chart below.

The merger of Disney+ Hotstar and JioCinema into one app has understandably rationalised the volume of the collective offering, compared to the previous years, when they operated as two separate platforms. ZEE5 shows a significant increase in its originals supply, primarily because of its newly-adopted positioning of being multi-language platform, leading to original content being commissioned across various languages.
From a format perspective, the content can be divided into four categories: Fiction series, direct-to-OTT films, reality shows, and documentaries. The chart below has the year-on-year percentage contribution of these four categories to the number of streaming originals in India.

There hasn't been a fundamental shift in the format breakup since 2023, with fiction series dominating, at 71% share. The table below has the format and language-wise breakup of the 274 originals launched in 2025.

Hindi remains the dominant language, accounting for 60% of streaming originals in India in 2025, a notch lower than its 65% share in 2024. Telugu has seen an improvement in its originals count, from 28 in 2024 to 35 in 2025. Several platforms, particularly JioHotstar, have announced their plans to expand their originals slate to other Indian languages besides Hindi, and in the 2026 report, we can expect to see higher share of Tamil and Telugu languages in particular.
Next, we look at the format-wise breakup of originals on different platforms in 2025.

Fiction series dominate the portfolio of all major platforms in 2025. Netflix has the most format-balanced portfolio, with the share of fiction series being only 50%. However, between fiction series and direct-to-OTT films, all platforms are in the 75-100% range, highlighting the continued dominance of scripted content in the streaming originals space in India.
